Q: My girlfriend and I are living together, but her parents have let it be known they don’t approve “because God doesn’t like it.” What’s the big deal? It’s so common today that I don’t see why anyone should object. — J.K.
A: It is not necessarily wrong for you and your girlfriend to live together. If it seems like the right thing to do emotionally, then carry on. Many religions (and especially Christianity) aim to control their adherents by teaching outdated rules and then threatening them with eternal damnation if these rules are broken. A growing number of people are coming to realize that these rules (and the religious beliefs behind them) are irrational. These people are then free to live their lives as they see fit according to reason and their own moral code.
