Q: How do you explain God to a 6-year-old? Our son keeps asking questions about God, but most of them are questions I’m not sure anyone could answer. But I don’t want to leave it at that, of course. — W.R.
A: You should explain it to him using language he understands. Tell him that god, Jesus, angles, Hell, etc are make-believe like Cinderella, Harry Potter or Rumpelstiltskin. They are fictional characters from a story written a long time ago. This is what I tell my children.
Parents who are interested in raising their children free of superstition and religious dogma may be interested in two books by Dale McGowan: Parenting Beyond Belief and Raising Freethinkers. I have not had a chance to read them yet, but they’ve been highly recommended to me from several people.
