Q: Do we know what Jesus looked like when He was a baby, or what Mary and Joseph looked like when He was born? I’ve been looking at the Christmas cards we’ve been getting this year, and most of them are similar in the way they picture them (at least the religious cards). — K.A.
A: We cannot know what any of these people looked like because they never existed. They are characters in a fictional story. Joseph, Mary, and Jesus are typically depicted by Europeans and Americans as white-skinned. However, if they had existed in the Middle East 2000 years ago, they likely would have had much darker colored skin. It is common for a culture to depict their deity in a manner that resembles themselves. This makes it easier for them to believe that they were made in the likeness of the deity. It is also very common (especially among Christians) for believers to project their values onto the god they believe in. This makes it easier for these people to believe their god is the one true god.
